About The Producer

Bodegas Proelio is a dynamic winery in Rioja that produces modern-style wines. The combination of high-altitude vineyards at a north orientation, respectful viticulture, and micro-vinifications all converge to showcase varietal expression in this unique terroir. Their wines are that of tradition with elegance, freshness, and acidity. They have applied for Organic Certification.

Terroir & Vineyard Practices:

This very old vine Grenache comes from select micro-plots in vineyards in Alto Najerilla, Badaran, and Cardenas. The 60+-year-old vines are planted at high density at an altitude of 600 meters. The calcareous silty soils have an elevated iron component, with rocky colluvial components over top of clay, and limestone. This type of soil produces elegant, refined, and fresh wines.

Tasting Notes

A modern style Old Vine Grenache with a black cherry red color. Intense and fresh on the nose, with balsamic notes, wild red fruits, and some dried herbs. On the palate, the wine is agile, fresh, and fruity, with good fluidity and great complexity. A beautiful finish with spice.

Vinification

Manual harvest in 18 kg boxes. Natural yeast fermentation in wooden vats with 30% stemmed fruit. Spontaneous malolactic fermentation is conducted in the wooden vats. The wine is aged in 20 HL French oak vats and 30HL oval casks for 12+ months.
