About The Producer

Gilles Maudry is the proprietor of Domaine de Maltaverne. For three generations, the Maudry family has been based in an authentic 19th-century farmhouse in Tracy-sur-Loire. Along with his father, Matthieu, they produce classically-styled Pouilly-Fumés with their unique smoky flint natures. It is only by the combination of aromatic Sauvignon Blanc and Kimmeridgian soils that Pouilly-Fumé is born.

Terroir & Vineyard Practices:

Sauvignon Blanc is particularly suited to the different terroirs of Pouilly-Fumé, and the Domaine’s vineyards are planted in the prized white limestone Kimmeridgian soils (fossilized oysters, perfect for beautiful minerality). The 30-40-year-old vines are south-west facing. Gilles and Matthieu farm organically.

Tasting Notes

Clear color, pale gold with silvery reflections. The first nose is fresh and focused on ripe fruit with white flesh. Refined and chiseled, the wine’s acidity gives it tension and freshness, which, mixed with aromas of white flowers, offer a certain balance. The wine has a beautiful weighted texture and length with a smoky, flint minerality on the finish. An excellent aperitif or served as an accompaniment to seafood such as fattier fish and oysters, white meats, and cheeses with character, such as goat cheeses.

Vinification

This Domaine is one of the few who allow vinification to occur entirely naturally, with spontaneous natural yeast fermentation. They also allow for the full malolactic fermentation to take place, which regulates the acidity, and brings the characteristic roundness to the estate's wines.
