About The Producer

Created in 1989, Domaine de Pignan can trace its origins back to an estate called Domaine Antoine Pecoul, which has been producing wines in Chateauneuf du Pape since 1855. This family estate is now under the care of Frederic Charvin (the fourth generation). Frederic lovingly maintains his family's 15-hectare estate of 25 different vineyard plots, all located in the Châteauneuf du Pape appellation (many of them in THE best sites).

Terroir & Vineyard Practices:

Tradition Rouge is made from grapes harvested across 13 ha of mixed soil types that include: calcareous to flint, sandy-silty, and rolled pebbles. The 80+-year-old vines bring deep concentration to the flavor profile.

Tasting Notes

A generous wine with a real potpourri of flavors - blackberry, raspberry, cherry, and strawberry swirl with cinnamon, overtones of toasted nuts, and vanilla beans. The silky feel with ripe tannins combines strength and power with fullness and sweet flavors.

Vinification

The grapes are handpicked and sorted. Maceration covers a period of 15-21 days. Then the wine is aged for 18 months in concrete and oak barrels.

  • "A blend of 64% Grenache, 13% Mourvèdre, 12% Syrah and 11% a mix of Cinsault, Counoise, Terret Noir, Vaccarèse and Muscardin, Pignan's 2018 Chateauneuf du Pape comes out of the bottle with aromas of espresso and asphalt. Give it some air, and red-fruit notes emerge, along with some pretty herbal nuances. It's medium to full-bodied, supple and silky in feel, with early- drinking appeal once it's been decanted. Drink 2021-2027.”-Joe Czerwinski, Wine Advocate
  • “As to the 2018 Châteauneuf Du Pape, this is a quality Provençal, spicy red offering medium-bodied richness, a fleshy, expansive mid-palate, lots of garrigue and spice nuances, and the depth to evolve nicely or 7-8 years at a minimum. Drink 2020-2028.”- Jeb Dunnuck
