Country: France

Color: Red

Varietal(s): 100% Syrah

About The Producer

Pierre Gaillard is considered to be one of France’s top wine producers in the Northern Rhone, whose business is centered in the medieval town of Malleval. His first acquisition was a parcel of land in the St Joseph appellation, “Le Clos de Cuminaille”.

Terroir & Vineyard Practices:

The Cru appellation of Crozes-Hermitage sits on the left bank of the Rhône River. It’s got lots of power thanks to the acidity and tannins since it hails from a cooler climate. This Crozes-Hermitage is made from 100% Syrah. The grapes are from a 5 ha contiguous parcel vineyard planted in the early 1980s. The gravel soils provide good drainage.

Tasting Notes

This Crozes-Hermitage (100% Syrah) made by Jeanne Gaillard is perfectly elegant, with alluring floral aromas, berry fruits, and earth – and it is one of the surest values for a high-quality wine from this Cru appellation.

Vinification

Jeanne's style is to hold onto the fruity flavors of the Syrah. Her vinification ensures the flavors remain fresh. Post-fermentation maceration. Malolactic fermentation in barrel. Aged 12 months used oak barrels.

  • 90 points - Vinous: "Opaque bright-rimmed ruby. Smoke-tinged blueberry and cherry on the nose, along with hints of cracked pepper and olive. Round and fleshy but lively as well, offering gently sweet blue fruit and floral pastille flavors supported by a spine of juicy acidity. The smoky note recurs on the gently tannic finish, which hangs on with very good tenacity. Drink 2021-2026."- Josh Raynolds, Vinous
  • 90 points - Wine Enthusiast: "Initial notes of earth and smoke on the nose dissipate with time and aeration revealing ripe, luscious black cherry and plum preserves. Medium-bodied but richly textured on the palate, it's an ample, intensely fruity Syrah anchored by an elegant frame of granite and acidity. Ready now but should hold through 2025."- Wine Enthusiast
