Scarzello - Region: Piedmont, Italy
About the Producer:
Scarzello (Azienda Agricola Scarzello) is a respected, small family-run wine producer in the heart of Barolo, Piedmont, established after World War II. Led by Federico Scarzello, the winery produces highly traditional, high-quality Barolo and Barbera from 5 hectares of vineyards, including the prestigious Sarmassa and Terlo crus. Third-generation winemaker Federico Scarzello took over in 2001 after training at the Alba School of Enology. He continues the legacy of producing elegant, terroir-driven, and long-lived wines, often released only when ready, which is later than many of their peers. Scarzello is recognized as a rising star of the traditional Barolo movement.
Our Wines
Langhe Nebbiolo – less complex than Scarzello’s other wines, this wine still expresses the structure, power, and elegance associated with Barolo. Produced with grapes from the Sarmassa area. Aged in oak for six to eight months, then in the bottle for at least six months.
Barbera d’Alba DOC Superiore – the first wine produced by Federico in the late 1990s, it perfectly showcases his philosophy that, after Nebbiolo, Barbera is the indigenous vine that most expresses the characters of the Langhe terroir: full-bodied, structured, and balanced by a good acidity. Produced with grapes from Sarmassa and Pajagallo. Aged in oak for 12 to 18 months and then 12 months in the bottle.
Barolo DOCG del Comune di Barolo – thanks to its delicate tannins, the Barolo del Comune di Barolo has a more immediate approach than the single vineyard. It’s ideal for shorter aging. Produced with grapes from Sarmassa and Terlo. Aged in oak for 24 months and then minimum two years aging in the bottle.
Barolo DOCG Sarmassa Vigna Merenda – Scarzello’s flagship wine. During harvest, five parcels of Vigna Merenda are separately harvested and vinified. After one year aging in wood, the five wines are blended until the perfect Barolo blend is reached. Because of this, Scarzello only produces this wine in the best vintages. Produced from grapes from Vigna Merenda, in the heart of Sarmassa. Aged in oak for 30 months and then a minimum of three years in the bottle. Average production: 5,500 bottles.
